Details: In June of 1997, Kristen Modafferi, a design student at North Carolina State University, arrived in San Francisco where she planned to spend the summer and three days later she got a job at a coffee shop in the Crocker Galleria in San Francisco's financial district. On June 23, just three weeks after she arrived, Kristen asked a co-worker for direction to Baker Beach, next to Land's End Beach. She clocked out at 3pm, but about 45 minutes later she was seen with an unidentified blond woman carrying a backpack and after that vanished. A bloodhound tracked Kristen's scent to Land's End Beach and was also tracked to the galleria and lost it at a bus stop. Among Kristen's possessions, they found a personal ad that read "Friend seeking female friend to share activities, enjoy music, photography, works out, walks, coffee, or simply enjoying the beach, and exploring the Bay Area" and authorities believed that Kristen either placed or answered the ad and that the person who may have answered or placed it may have information about the case. On July 10, 1997, a phone call came into the ABC affiliate, KGO, and the caller said that he knew exactly who killed Kristen and that two women had kidnapped her, killed her, and then dumped her body under a bridge in the Point Reyes area of Marin County. When police questioned the two women, they said that the caller was probably a man named Jon Onuma, who was angry with them because they were about to fire his girlfriend. Three other women came forward and claimed that they had had trouble with Jon and his girlfriend, and they claimed that the girlfriend had lured them to Jon and he then tortured the women. One woman even said that Jon said "Now you know what happened to Kristen Modafferi!" Finally, when police searched Jon's apartment they found that his girlfriend's diary had pages ripped out of it; those pages were for around the time that Kristen vanished. However, police still do not have enough evidence to arrest Jon and the Modafferis hope that someone will come forward to help find their daughter.
Suspects: A man named Jon Onuma called the police with a tip that Kristin had been killed as part of a lesbian love triangle with two other women, but this story failed to check out and is now believed to be false information created to throw the authorities off track. Jon Onuma is now a person of interest in the case.
Extra Notes: This case originally ran on the June 20, 2001 episode.
This case was also covered in the series, Haunting Evidence, on Court TV.
