Details: In June 1997, Kristen Modafferi, a design student at North Carolina State University, arrived in San Francisco where she planned to spend the summer studying photography at nearby UC Berkeley. Kristen found employment at Spinelli's Coffee Shop during the week and at Café Museo located inside of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art on weekends. She was scheduled to begin classes at Berkeley on June 24th, 1997. On June 23, just one day before classes began, she asked a Spinelli's Coffee Shop coworker for directions to Baker Beach, next to Land's End Beach. She clocked out of work for the day at 3pm and was last seen at 3:45 pm with an unidentified blond woman.A bloodhound tracked her scent to Land's End Beach and the mall where Spinelli's Coffee was located, but then the dog lost her scent at a bus stop.
Police soon came across a personal ad that read "Friend seeking female friend to share activities, enjoy music, photography, works out, walks, coffee, or simply enjoying the beach, and exploring the Bay Area" which they believed Kristen had either placed or answered. They suspected that the person who answered or placed the ad was connected to or actually was the unknown blonde woman last seen with Kristen after she left work on June 23, 1997.
On July 10, 1997, a phone call came into the ABC affiliate, KGO from a man named Jon Onuma. Jon stated that two lesbians had kidnapped her, killed her, and then dumped her body under a bridge in the Point Reyes area of Marin County. When police questioned the two women they said that Jon Onuma was angry with them because they fired his girlfriend from the place where they worked. Three other women came forward and claimed that Jon tortured women. Finally, when police searched his apartment they found that his girlfriend's diary had pages ripped out of it; those pages were around the time that Kristen vanished. Police never had enough evidence to arrest him, so he was set free.
Kristen Modaferri remains missing.
Suspects: Jon Onuma called the police with a tip that Kristin had been killed as part of a lesbian love triangle with two other women, but this story failed to check out and is now believed to be false information created to throw the authorities off track. Jon Onuma is now a person of interest in the case.
Extra Notes: This case first aired on the June 20, 2001 episode. It was also covered in the series, Haunting Evidence, on Court TV.
