Case

Details: Kim Leggett was last seen outside of the Rose Cotton Gin (owned by her father-in-law) company where she worked as a secretary. At about 4:30 pm on October 9, 1984, came in with some produce which Kim helped him weigh. Shortly afterwards, she was seen talking to two unidentified men who were standing next to her car and a white sports car. When the customer brought in another load of produce to be weighed at 5pm, Kim was nowhere to be found. At about 4:45pm the same day, her parents received a phone call telling them that their daughter had been kidnapped and demanding a ransom. Thinking it was a joke, they tried to call Kim at work, but got no answer. They drove to the gin and found Kim's college textbooks open on her desk and a calculator that was turned on, but no sign of Kim herself. A ransom note demanding $250,000 was mailed to the family. The letter appeared to have been written by Kim, but someone else had written out the envelope.
Suspects: Leggett's stepfather, Lefty Gardner, was in the Confederate Air Force at the time of of the disappearance. Some people believe that Kim was abducted as retaliation for Gardner refusing to smuggle contraband into Mexico, but there is little evidence of that. Leggett's husband was initially considered a suspect, but was soon cleared.
Extra Notes: This case first aired on April 29, 1985 as part of Missing... Have You Seen This Person? Special #1.
