Details: In 1971, Hans and Betty Hansen moved to Willow Creek, California, with their four kids, Donny, Becky, and twins Jill and Julie. Everything seemed perfect in them until November 14, 1986, when a fire broke out in their trailer as Donny slept on the sofa in the living room. Hans tried fighting the flames with a fire extinguisher, later recalling stumbling over a suspicious gas container on the front porch. Julie was found by neighbors in a field, barely alive. She had a wound in her stomach, and paramedics believed that she was injured in a fire-related explosion. Doctors, however, made a shocking discovery that she had been shot in the abdomen. The next morning, Jill was found dead in the house and was determined to have been shot to death.
Police later found the gun that shot Julie in the Hansens' warehouse, and one night while police were guarding it, Donny tried to break in. They determined that he bought a gun a few days before the shooting, and had also purchased several gallos of gas not long before it. Julie later claimed to have seen his face in the flash of a gun shot before she was shot. It seemed someone had set the fire to cover up the murder. He was later questioned by police, arrested, and charged with arson and murder. Then, on December 19, 1986, Julie died in a freak medical accident, and prosecutors now had a more difficult case to handle without the key witness.
In April 1988, Donny went on trial for the murders of his half-sisters. One part of the defense was based on a neighbor who apparently witnessed two unidentified men near the trailer while it was on fire. The jury believed the scenario that they killed the girls and Donny was found not guilty. He moved from the area after his aquittal, legally changed his name due to the notoriety of the case, and continues to maintain his innocence. His mother and stepfather believe he is guilty of the murders and the attempted arson cover-up, as do the local law enforcement. The case remains unsolved, due to the procedural defense of double jeopardy that forbids a defendant from being tried again on the same, or similar charges following a legitimate acquittal or conviction.
