Details: Elena Emery is the wife of 31-year-old Adam Emery, who was tried and convicted of second degree murder in the 1990 stabbing death of Jason Bass, 20, in Warwick, Rhode Island. While Adam and Elena were sitting in their car at a roadside food stand with another couple, he noticed a car sideswipe his vehicle and chased down the wrong car, yelling at Jason Bass about the damage to his car. Having no idea what Adam was yelling about, Jason had tried to drive off, but Adam grabbed onto the car, refusing to let go, before stabbing Jason through the heart. In court, he was strangely emotionless and maintained that he "had to defend himself."
The day he was convicted, he and Elena vanished. Their abandoned car was found on the Newport Bridge where they are believed to have jumped to their deaths. Because no trace of Adam has ever surfaced, some believe he faked his death but evidence goes both ways. One fact that supports the planned suicide theory is that Elena purchased 80 pounds of weights, sweatsuits, and athletic socks at a sporting goods store barely a half hour after the verdict was read -- something she would not be thinking about at the time without some motivation. Second, she was seen mouthing the words, "We're gonna do what we originally planned. You promised me." to Adam in a courtroom video right after the verdict was read. Some think the cryptic words mean that they had planned to commit suicide all along if he was found guilty. Or had they concocted a well-made plan to escape? Nobody knows for sure since Adam and Elena are still classified as missing. However, the FBI considers them to be alive and continues to pursue them.
Suspects: Authorities believed that Adam and Elena committed suicide as no foul play was suspected.
Extra Notes: This case first aired on the October 14, 1994 episode.
Results: Solved. One year after the couple vanished, Elena's remains were discovered in the river. A fragment from one of the socks she purchased was found clinging to one of her leg bones. Authorities believe that she commited suicide with Adam, but he has never been found.
