CaseEdit

Details: David Gause was a thirty-one-year old handyman hired to do repairs to an apartment building on New York's Upper East Side. In early 1992, a woman named "Deedra" was the only tenant left in her building after it was slated to be torn down and the other tenants left. The building was in great need of repair, and her landlord hired David to repair a leak in her ceiling. After Gause fixed the ceiling, he was given more work and he began living temporarily in a basement apartment. One night, Deedra smelled smoke and went down to the basement. Gause told her that he was trying to cook soup in a can. Fearing that he could set the place on fire, Deedra told him that he could borrow her pots and pans if he needed them.
On March 29, 1992, at around 9:30AM, Gause arrived at Deedra's door, asking to borrow a frying pan. However, he then forced himself into her apartment, assaulted and then raped her. Then, he took out an ice pick and advanced on her again. Realizing that he was going to kill her, Deedra tried to convince Gause that he was her boyfriend and he became confused. He claimed he needed money to pay off of a debt, so Deedra gave him all of the money that she had. He then left and Deedra immediately called the police, but Gause was long gone.
A background check done by the police on Gause showed that he had a long list of arrests that included armed robbery, assault, and grand larceny. Also, they discovered that he was wanted for another rape in Nassau County; in that case, the victim was an acquaintance. Although he hasn't been seen in almost three years, authorities feel that Gause has and will rape again.
Extra Notes: This case first aired on the December 8, 1995 episode. The victim was given the fictitious name "Deedra" to protect her identity.
Results: Captured. David Gause, using the alias David Johnson, was arrested on December 11, 1996, in Laurinburg, North Carolina as a result of viewer's tips from a rebroadcast of his segment. He was returned to New York and convicted of seven charges, including rape and sodomy, and was sentenced to forty years in prison.
